Boylan and Boyan are Irish names derived from a Gaelic sept of Oriel, which arose originally from the same stock as the O'Flanagans of Fermanagh who were in early medieval times located in a widespread territory stretching from Fermanagh to Louth. Later they were reduced by the McMahons, but still retained the greater part of the Barony of Datary in County Monaghan. O'Dugan in his fourteenth century 'Topographical Poem' praises them for their horsemanship and comments on their blue eyes, calling them 'the bold Kings of Dartry'. They are still more numerous in the Monaghan, Cavan and Meath area than elsewhere. In Gaelic the name is O' Baoigheallain. The Boylan family crest (or coat of arms) came into existence many centuries ago. The process of creating these coats of arms began as early as the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this, including Ireland. The new more formalized art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own family crest, coat of arms, including Boylan descendants.
