Meaning 'assembly', variants of the name Daly include Daley, O'Daly, Dailey and Dalley. This family have a continuous record of literary achievements throughout the history of Ireland. The first of the great Daly poets was Curonnacht O'Dalaigh, which is the Irish form of the name. The sept was located in Magheradernon, County Westmeath, and were of the Southern Ui Neill. From there they successfully spread throughout Ireland. Two of the more modern poets were Robert Daly, 1783-1872, and John O'Daly, 1800-1878. O'Daly may be said to be the greatest name in Gaelic Literature. Other septs may have produced one or two famous individuals, but this family have a continuous record of literary achievements from the twelfth to the fifteenth century. The Daly family crest (or coat of arms) came into existence many centuries ago. The process of creating these coats of arms began as early as the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this, including Ireland. The new more formalized art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own family crest, coat of arms, including Daly descendants.
